Valentino Rossi shone as a special guest at the 23rd edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. After a stunning race at the TT Assen Circuit yesterday, where Valentino Rossi won his third race this season, the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider made his first ever appearance at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed, which carried a theme of nostalgia and pride in the growing interest in motorsport, as Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. took the occasion to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The nine-time World Champion was specially invited by Lord March to make his debut at this famous event as a guest star. Rossi traveled straight from the Dutch GP to the UK to be able to attend the event, where he was accompanied by Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd Executive Vice President, Takaaki Kimura, Yamaha Motor Europe President, Kazuhiro Kuwata, YMC Motorsports Division's General Manager, Kouichi Tsuji and Yamaha Motor Racing Managing Director, Lin Jarvis. They had the pleasure of joining a star studded guest list including numerous famous sportsmen, celebrities and VIPs, for a gala dinner and ball on the Saturday evening at Lord Marchs grand estate, before the action started the morning after. Sunday kicked off with Rossi, Lord March, Kimura-san, Kuwata-san, Tsuji-san and Jarvis revealing the Doctors Yamaha YZR-M1, equipped with a special livery, in Yamahas display area in the F1 Paddock. The yellow and retro styled bike commemorates Yamaha Motors 60th anniversary and the ceremony was completed by motorsport legends Kenny Roberts, Giacomo Agostini and Phil Read taking part in this celebration of Yamahas supreme racing heritage. Rossis yellow bike was in good company at the Yamaha exhibition; other iconic show bikes on display were Phil Reads 1965 RD56, Giacomo Agostinis 1975 YZR500 OW23 and Kenny Robertss 1978 YZR750 OW31. After the thrilling ride, involving a 300ft rise, there was more excitement waiting. Rossi was interviewed by Goodwood TV on the balcony of Lord Marchs mansion before joining the host and Formula 1 rider Nico Rosberg for lunch. The Italian concluded his first Goodwood experience by honouring this years theme of the Goodwoord event, âFlat-Out and Fearless Racing on the Edge. The 2015 Yamaha YZR-M1 retains the familiar overall dark blue and white colour scheme with a revised and resized Movistar logo and a refreshed livery. Also presented were the Teamâs new partners Abarth, the FCA Groupâs prestigious, sports oriented brand and Cromax, the global coatings brand for refinish body-shops. Abarth and Cromax were not the only new faces as Japanese technical clothing manufacturer Descente joins as the clothing provider for the team. Following a photo session both Rossi and Lorenzo took questions from the assembled media on the new machine and their hopes for the upcoming season with Rossi chasing his 10th World Championship title and 5th for Yamaha and the Doctorâ finishing second overall last year while Lorenzo looks to get off to a better start this year compared to a disastrous first half of the 2014 season. Rossi and Lorenzo ready to get on track in Sepang next week With the first official test of 2015 scheduled to take place at the Sepang International Circuit next week 4th-6th Feb, both Rossi is excited to see the progress of the Yamaha engineers on the new M1. He said, âTo present the bike and team means that a new season is about to start. The desire to start a new challenge is really huge, especially after the positive end of the 2014 season. Finishing second in the world championship was important, but this year the goal is even higher. Yamaha have worked so hard during the winter, and me too. I am in good shape, I feel good, I'm training a lot and I'm ready to begin the hard work at the Sepang test. The new bike is really beautiful; I really like it. Now I want to meet up with my team and work with all of them to achieve the best possible results. It will be a very interesting season. I will have very strong opponents, starting from my teammate who will surely be better prepared this winter. It will be important to do a good test and arrive at the first race with everything in the right place, then we will be ready to fight for victory,â Rossi added. Lorenzo revealed that he has been training harder in the off-season this year and feels more confident about the upcoming season. âThis event always means a special date for all of us,â Lorenzo said who continued, âItâs the official kick off of the season and I have to say itâs usually a special moment because we can see the final project and also the new livery. I love the new bike and Iâm waiting to test it as soon as possible. With this unveiling starts a new challenge, an amazing challenge. I am much more motivated than ever to start this season. I have prepared well physically and I feel good mentally too. This year we have high hopes with the new M1 because in 2014 we found at the end a good base and we could fight for the podium regularly during the second half of the season. I am convinced that this year things will change and both Yamaha and I will put all our efforts to try to achieve the goal that is simple to fight for the title. Last year many things happened but I've also learned a lot and I think we can compensate and make a great year. Iâm waiting to kick off the coming season in Qatar!â Lorenzo added. TelefĂłnica President Luis Miguel GilpĂ©rez said he is happy to continue with the partnership with Yamaha and revealed that in the past year they increased their number of customers from 700,000 to 2 million. He said, âWe will bet for motorcycling once again in 2015 with the focus not only on our clients but also on the people who are not. We will offer them the chance to ride the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP bike, while sitting in front of their own TVâs, so they can see that we are capable of offering the best TV, the best sport and show with a new form of accessing it, from all of their devices with a multi screen option.â Yamaha racing boss Lin Jarvis is very happy to have the continued partnership with Movistar and is convinced Rossi and Lorenzo will be fighting for many victories this year. He said, âThis year we have decided to present the new bike at the home of Movistar, at the Distrito TelefĂłnica in Madrid. The âMâ for Movistar on the fairings of our M1 is even bigger this year representing even greater union between us. We are once again fortunate to have two great champions in the team and two of the best riders in the world Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo. Both want to achieve their goal, to win races and to win the title and I am sure they will be committed to work together as Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team Factory riders to make their bikes faster and more competitive to challenge our competitors. The team held a launch event in Madrid on Wednesday morning to show off an altered colour scheme including more prominence for title sponsor Movistar. Yamaha's riders have lost the title to Honda man Marc Marquez for the past two seasons, and were left reeling when Marquez won 10 straight grands prix at the start of 2014. Kouichi Tsuji, group leader of Yamaha's MotoGP programme, said the margin between the two teams was smaller than results suggested, and that though there was limited scope for big steps, his team had made significant progress. "We had second on the podium 10 times, and eight times the difference from the winner was two seconds after a 120km [75-mile] race," he said. "The development room with the bike is very small, but we did many things to try to find those two seconds in the races because we want a champion at the end of the season." Team boss Lin Jarvis said Yamaha had the riders and technical package it required to take on Marquez and Honda this year. "You have to learn from your mistakes and to continue to develop and evolve," he said. "We have to get everything right. Everything has to be perfect from the first race. "That's a difficult call, but I think our riders are well prepared and our team are well organised. We're ready to go. "I think both Valentino and Jorge are in great shape physically and mentally. "Last year Marquez had a phenomenal year, so we know the level of competition will be super-super-strong, but we have the riders we want. "I'm totally confident they will go out there and be competitive and win many, many races." LORENZO HAS ADDRESSED FITNESS After running Marquez close for the 2013 title, Lorenzo had an awful start to the '14 campaign with a series of early mistakes quickly dropping him out of championship contention. He admitted during the year that he had not been in proper physical condition for the start of the year following winter surgery to address 2013 injuries, but is adamant he is now in much better shape. "Maybe last year I took a little too much holiday and made a few mistakes in planning pre-competition," said Lorenzo. "This year I'm not going to make this mistake and I'm going to be in better shape. "I feel very good - I'm thin, just like when I was 20. There's no way to measure one's physical capacity, but you get certain feelings and I've never trained so hard or for so many hours. "Everything was very well planned. I'm working on those weak points from last year."
